Treatment for Trauma Survivors

Survivors of trauma and abuse-those who have experienced physical or sexual abuse, war or terrorism, and so forth-can benefit greatly from hands-on massage and bodywork. At a certain point in the recovery process, a healthy bodywork environment creates another opportunity for the survivor to feel safe with his/her body and the emotional self. Bodywork assists the survivor in developing a positive and compassionate relationship with his or her body. During the treatment session, clients practice taking control of boundaries by actively participating in decisions about what areas of the body are treated or not treated, what the pace of the treatment will be and what type of pressure is used. Most helpful in the later stages of recovery, when the client is integrating his or her trauma experience and rebuilding connections with the outside world, the bodywork treatment session can be an important adjunct to psychotherapy for the trauma survivor.
